The story of Agriauto

Agriauto Industries began in 1981 and was incorporated in Karachi. It was the first Pakistani company to gain TS16949 certification, which allows the holder to trade within the automotive sector. In January 2010, Fahim Kapadia was appointed CEO, who has been active in House of Habib business for 22 years. Him and some of his former colleagues now serve on the board of Agriauto and other automotive businesses to foster improvement among participants in the sector.

The company now produces all manner of parts, including shock absorbers, struts, catalytic converters and sheet metal. They collaborate with companies like KYB Corporation in Japan and Gabriel Ride Control in the US to improve their technical versatility.

Career prospects

Agriauto tends only to recruit either management or ‘technical’ university graduates, namely those with the knowledge to develop and understand their portfolio of parts. This is therefore a natural fit for mechanical engineers wanting exposure to the design and production of these parts, but there are also plenty of challenges for graduates from business or management degrees.

Former managers have reported retention issues, as well as internal politics. Learning to deal with these is therefore a way of developing essential management skills, which can be taken elsewhere.

Technical training is provided via the JTS Institute, Karachi and supply-chain management courses delivered by LUMS, Lahore, making Agriauto a solid training ground.

While promotions are infrequent for employees with less than four years experience, lateral movement to other House of Habib auto industries, such as Thal Engineering, AuVitrionics or Thal Boshoku, is always a possibility. Taking advantage of this network is a smart way to diversify your experience and avoid career stagnation.

The culture

Agriauto boasts a variety of benefits, which facilitate a culture that is employee-oriented. In some branches, free lunches and a transport allowance are provided. There’s also at least one tea break and one prayer break each day. Each employee gets an annual medical check-up, including eye treatment. Regular team-building events provide every employee with the opportunity to sharpen their critical thinking skills. Semi-regular cricket events are also a staple of life at Agriauto.

They’re also very proud of their ‘safety culture’, which entails mandatory training programs for both contractors and full-time employees. Compliance with government safety regulations is also reinforced. Their ultimate goal is to reduce hazards and injuries to zero, which some employees say contributes to the atmosphere.

Mission & values

Agriauto’s primary motive is to become a world-class manufacturer of auto parts for the benefit of stakeholders.

One of its core values is sustainability. It’s a member of the United Nations Global Compact, an agreement to adopt sustainable business practices in service to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. It has been making regular progress reports to the Compact since 2008, including detailed descriptions of their actions and goals.

One of its notable focuses has been community development. “Lack of proper education facilities and poor health in the region remain our foremost concern”, said CEO Fahim Kapadia in 2019. They’ve since funded schools like the Government Girls School Hub to combat regressive social attitudes toward educating women. They also distributed Rs 3.7 million in food rations to poor local workers that same year. They continue developing these initiatives today.
