The BDO Partners story

BDO Partners was founded in 1958, known initially as Burah Hathy & Co. It wasn’t until 2010 that Burah Hathy & Co changed its name to BDO Partners – BDO stands for Binder, Dijker, and Otte. Today, the BDO Partners has over 300 people in Sri Lanka, and the BDO network has over 88,000 people in over 1,800 offices globally.

The recruitment process

Interested candidates can apply for a position with BDO Partners by using their career database. The application only requires some essential information about yourself and a copy of your resume/CV.

The interview process with BDO Partners is often relatively short and to the point, depending on the position. Most interviews involve meeting with a hiring manager, and occasionally with an experienced employee in the position in which you’re interested.

Overall, from the beginning of the process to the end, it can take about two to four weeks for a decision and answer.

Career prospects

Seeing as BDO Partners is a Chartered Accountant firm, they’re mostly looking for recent graduates with degrees in Accounting, Business, or Information Systems. The company provides a lot of hands-on experience and opportunities across a variety of industries within the financial sector and seeks to provide customised career paths with each employee. The company values hard work and going the extra mile, so opportunities for moving up are available to those who want them.

Remuneration

BDO Partners shares no exact numbers regarding salary ranges, but are comparable to the averages in Sri Lanka. An Audit Manager with the group can earn around LKR 1.42m (USD 7,830) annually. A Tech IS Auditor (senior executive) can earn up to LKR 4m (USD 22,058) per year. Senior auditors or accountants make anywhere from LKR 2.9m to 3.75m (USD 15,992 to 20,403) annually.

The culture

Reportedly, BDO is in a constant state of aggressive growth while simultaneously trying to save every possible penny, which translates into very long working hours and a reasonably stressful work environment.

The competition

Though BDO Partners is a vast global network, they’re not the only large firm of Chartered Accountants in Sri Lanka. A couple of competitors worth mentioning are Gajma & Co and Aiyar & Co. Gajma & Co offers similar services to BDO Partners, but their firm exists strictly in Sri Lanka.

General vibe of the place

BDO Partners offers plenty of opportunities for those who wish to learn and grow in their respective fields, but the work environment is highly competitive and not for the faint of heart. The company has a focus on aggressively expanding its network, which reflects in the way they evaluate employees for promotion. In other words, there are opportunities with BDO but expect to put in a lot of work to reach them.
