Brayden Courtney

One thing that drew me to applying for the graduate programme at Contact is that they offer specialised work in some very unique places. For me, the ability to live in Central Otago on the Clutha River comes with the benefits of skiing, biking, surfing, hiking, all in some very sweet scenery.

Contact isn’t actually a new workplace for me. I’ve spent a summer as an intern at Clyde Power Station. I’m very excited to come back to Contact in a graduate role now that I’ve completed my studies.

I studied Mechanical Engineering at University of Canterbury. Over the four years (plus a summer!) I spent studying, I have increased my ability to understand problems and form solutions based on the engineering principles I learnt.

I’m now based at Clyde Dam working as a Mechanical Engineer Hydro Graduate. My years at university have equipped me with the tools to think laterally and understand what needs to be done to solve issues. When working on large systems like the Clutha Dams, each issue presented has so far been unique and gives me a great opportunity to use this toolkit.

A great place to work – in some unique places

One of the first things I noticed when I started my first internship at Clyde Dam is how great the working culture is there. With lots of maintenance and upgrade happening, it is important to make sure no single person is overworked. They really do care about every employee and that everything goes okay. Since I had already done an internship with the team, it was easy to get into the working rhythm with the Clyde team.

The journey to net zero

Another reason I applied is that Contact is aiming to lead the decarbonisation of Aotearoa. They’ve increased their investment into future renewable sources across the board while ensuring they satisfy environmental and community interests. It’s imperative that there’s more renewable energy available so that New Zealand can become net zero.

I’m passionate about living in a country that is aiming for net zero and I’m very excited to work at Contact where this is the overarching company goal. Through my work, I strive to innovate and contribute to a sustainable future.

Looking forward

Looking further ahead at my career at Contact, I aspire to secure personal success as I leverage my skills and expertise to make meaningful and morally right contributions to Contact’s decarbonisation efforts and the broader renewable energy sector. I see my journey at Contact as a pathway for continual learning and professional development, as I contribute to a sustainable future.
