Dylan Sheaves

I work in the OTS department of Essential Energy, helping keep the lights on for the majority of NSW and parts of Queensland.

I am currently working in a period of transition so my day is probably a bit choppy than it normally would be.

7.30 AM

Most important I suppose are my work hours, I get up at 07:30, start work at 08:30 and finish at 17:00 with a lunchbreak taken at somewhere around 12:00 – 12:30 (in the middle of my work day) depending on what works best with the tasks of the day.

8.30 AM

Mornings are fairly consistent for me, I settle in to work at 08:30 and get my equipment set up and check for any urgent emails, meeting requests for the upcoming day or reminders for new learning materials I need to complete and organize my list of things to do for the day into an order of events that makes sense for me.

9.00 AM

At 09:00 (and again at 09:30 on Mondays) I attend a stand-up meeting for the entire e-tech department covering the current goings on within the department where it may impact other areas (important to know as it may impact my work day to some lesser or greater extent).

Once these general daily meetings are concluded my day varies a fair amount from week to week depending on what actually needs doing at the time, OTS covers large swathes of EE’s business including its most important parts so no two days are ever really the same. However, my days tend to include meeting with other employees of the business to learn from their experiences in their field to help bring some of that knowledge into OTS to aid in its operation, explanations of critical OT systems from more experienced team members or having check-ins to ensure I am comfortable and happy in my position with either my line manager, another higher manager or my designated graduate buddy.

I have also been given a number of projects of my own to handle, mostly regarding to cataloguing and tracking of OTS assets, as stated this is currently a time of change for EE so having definite records of everything that needs to be included in that change is paramount and so when such tasks arise they are always the top priority.

When time allows for after lunch (which I have in the kitchen of my home as I work remotely) I do some professional skill study through Pluralsight or the EE internal learning system to help develop the skills I need to continuously improve my work and skills therein.

It isn’t all work however as I do take the opportunity every 2 hours to leave my desk and take a lap walking around the house to help stretch my legs and keep myself from getting cramped and uncomfortable at the desk and I find these short 2-3 minute jaunts are a great help to clear my mind of any sort of excess thoughts or weariness that can accumulate from working on a singular task for too long, keeping me fresh and at the top of my game.

5.00 PM

When 17:00 rolls around at the end of each working day I finish up whatever outstanding task I am currently working on and bid farewell to my colleagues and close up my work for the day.
