Lucas Leung

A workshop is a great way to engage the client and get the creative juices flowing. This opportunity is exciting because I get to interact with clients and do some business travel.

6.10 AM

Every day I wake up nice and early to get ready to do some exercise. It helps me feel energised and fresh for work. I often have to bring a big duffel bag with me to work which has all my gym/run gear, a change of clothes for work, my pre-prepared lunch and my laptop. The office has some lockers so sometimes I leave my technology at work, so I don't need to carry it the next day.

7.00 AM

I try to get to the city by 7.00 am to meet my friends for an 8-10km run along the Circular Quay/Pyrmont area. When the weather is good, the views are amazing. The Mastercard office is in St Leonards, so I always ensure to leave enough time to have a shower and get in on time. Sometimes my training goes a little overtime but there's no strict office arrival time in the mornings which gives me great flexibility!

Driving to work is always a great option for me because of the free parking available at the office. All it takes is a quick swipe of my pass to get inside. The lift takes me straight up to my desk which makes it super convenient.

I get into the office at this time pretty consistently. Our building has a huge logo at the front entrance and also at the top of the building. My team sits on the fourth floor, but I usually head to the fifth floor first because the good coffee machine is there.

My colleagues love doing catch-ups in the morning over some light snacks. There's a really nice croissant place in the neighbouring suburb Crow's Nest that the team likes to go to. Pictured here are the tiramisu and basil croissants. I like to pair it with a coffee from the office kitchen to save a bit of money every morning.

The first thing I do when I sit down is sift through my email inbox and Teams chats. I like to update my task list for the day and understand all the new information and communications sent by my team. My time is split between strategy and analytics projects, so I like to touch base with both of my project managers to ensure I'm prioritising the right tasks and developing the relevant skills to succeed.

10.30 AM

I start the morning with a project check-in with my team. We are currently preparing for an in-person workshop we are going to run with the client in their office. The goal of the workshop is to work with technical and product teams to ideate features for a new card-issuing offering they are planning on implementing. A workshop is a great way to engage the client and get the creative juices flowing. This opportunity is exciting because I get to interact with clients and do some business travel.

Lunchtime is always something to look forward to. Today, all the grads met up for lunch on the fifth floor next to our balcony. I'm not exactly the best cook so I prepare a salad to eat for lunch every day. It has a combination of veggies, tuna/chicken for the protein and hummus for the dressing. Lunch is also a great opportunity to catch up with the other grads and hears about all the cool work they are doing in other areas of the business.

After working at my desk for the morning, I like to change the scenery by going to the balcony to finish some work. The fresh air, nice breeze and stunning view create the perfect atmosphere to stay productive. I focus on my preparation for afternoon meetings and the immediate deliverables I need to complete during this time.

2.00 PM

I go back to my desk to do some research, create some slides and attend my afternoon meetings. I like this seat because it's closest to the kitchen and elevator which means I don't need to walk too far. I also frequently use the standing desk if I start getting a bit tired so I can still stay productive!

During the late afternoon period of the day, my team loves going for a break to play some ping pong on the ground floor of the office. Sometimes we break a sweat due to how intense some of the matches get. We hold an annual ping pong tournament within our team for ultimate bragging rights.

After a long day, I start wrapping up and getting ready to go home. I head to the train station to head back to the city with some of my team before taking the light rail home.
