One of the current projects that I am working on is an analysis of the effectiveness and value of Loyalty rewards offers that Mastercard provides and comparing that to other rewards programs that are in the market.

What's your job about?

The Account Management (Merchant & Commerce) team in Mastercard is involved in managing the relationships between Mastercard and the biggest merchants within the Retail sector within Australia. This involves developing a relationship between the two companies, where Mastercard’s Account Managers (AM) develop a deeper understanding of what a Retailer’s long-term strategy is, what they want to achieve (digital enablement, growth of on-line sales, test & learn concepts etc.) and work with the retailer to offer one of Mastercard’s many different solutions (e.g. Data & Services, Cyber & Intelligence, Loyalty etc.). We want Retailers to view Mastercard as trusted partners who they can go to for any problems and wanting to continually grow together.

As an Associate Analyst, my tasks include running the weekly team-meetings, monthly reporting for Account Managers to the number and volume of transactions for Merchants, preparing ledgers and conducting Quarterly Business Reviews for key Merchants. I also support directors with specific ad-hoc requests such as pulling data from a variety of tools (e.g % of transactions processed online).

One of the current projects that I am working on is an analysis of the effectiveness and value of Loyalty rewards offers that Mastercard provides (e.g. get $25 cashback off $100 spend with MasterCard) and comparing that to other rewards programs that are in the market. One of my favourite things about this project is the level of freedom that is granted to me to complete this project. For example, I am provided data relating to different offers which I can then input into a custom designed PowerPoint to be presented internally!

What's your background?

I was born and raised in Melbourne my whole life, going to high school in the inner-city and attended the University of Melbourne studying a Bachelor of Commerce (Management/Marketing). Prior to working at Mastercard, I worked for one year in Consulting as a technology graduate before deciding to move jobs. Funnily enough, I was on the train looking at different companies within Tech when I came across MasterCard, and within 4 weeks of applying (including the Christmas break), had interviewed, and started the following month!

I have been at MasterCard for just over 2 months and have loved every single day of it- from being able to meet other graduates in Sydney to the work that I am exposed to every single day.

I would say one of the most stages of my life was being able to gain experience working while at University. I worked in Retail Banking which allowed me to develop and gain invaluable skills and experiences. I think being able to relate back to times when a problem arose and how I solved them allowed me to excel in figuring out different methods to solve a problem.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Absolutely! MasterCard looks for people that are analytical and love building relationships, so as long as you have a curious mind and love speaking to people whether internally or externally, then you will be right for this job. Before applying, I think it is important to be up be informed around the industry, the company and also specific stream that you are applying to and how your skills and experience can match these.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

One of the coolest things about working at MasterCard is seeing the logo everywhere you go. For example, you go to your local coffee store and you see the MasterCard logo when you are about to pay and in your mind go ‘hey I work there!’ It makes me smile on the inside and be proud to be able to say to people that I work at MasterCard!

What are the limitations of your job?

The limitation of the job are that because MasterCard is so big, it can often take time to learn the many different tools to pull out data and reports- but everyone is always willing to help and provide guidance on how to tackle a problem so that you never feel helpless.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Join a student committee/club to meet like-minded students who have the same interest as you
  • Get a part-time job in the industry you want to work in, this will come in handy when applying for internship/graduate roles.
  • Always make time to go out with friends! University only takes up a small portion of your life so it is important to maximise the fun you have while there!
