Pros & Cons

  • I love the collaborative aspect of my work. My team come from various working backgrounds and bring different perspectives – I am learning a lot from them. The variety of project work keeps things interesting and engaging, and allows me to develop different skills.
  • The culture. People are very friendly and easy-going. Senior management is always happy to help assist and guide graduates.
  • The culture in the Perth office is very positive and supportive. We are a small but close team who enjoy each other's company and are more than happy to help each other out. Being in a smaller office means I get more exposure to unique opportunities and frequently speak with upper management.
  • I consider the best thing about McGrathNicol to be the people's culture. All levels of service across all service lines are incredibly open and accessible. It is great to be able to build strong relationships with people all across the firm.
  • The amount of variety in the engagements I work on allows me to learn new things all the time.
  • Elements of the work can be tedious and administrative, which are not overly enjoyable but need to be done.
  • Strict formal dress code.
  • Due to our smaller team size, sometimes during busy periods we may need to work longer hours but this is only through particularly busy periods. It is not expected of new starters to do this though.
  • A project may sometimes feel under-resourced, and that can mean some longer days when deadlines are tight. To an extent, this is just the nature of the work. However, managers and partners recognise the effort and are appreciative.
  • As you gain more responsibilities, it can be stressful to manage the workload and deadlines.

Culture
The culture at McGrathNicol is amazing, and it would be the reason why I would recommend anyone to work at the firm. While there is a pretty standard role hierarchy, all levels from partners, directors, and managers are all very approachable and as an analyst you get the opportunity to work side-by-side with partners. Managers are very supportive of your skills development as a graduate and create an environment that allows you to ask questions, solicit feedback and make improvements over time.

My primary role as an Analyst is to support the project team with building out financial information and performing analysis to understand trends and historical and future performance, among other things. Outside of that key role, as an Analyst you are involved in the project from day 1, helping prepare the project scope and engagement letter, project setup in our internal systems, work-in-progress reporting, attending meetings with key stakeholders, and preparing the final deliverable alongside partners and managers.

The managers, particularly in my team, are fantastic. Very caring and empathetic, but also supportive in helping you to chase work that you're interested in and to challenge you. Communication and feedback are very thorough and a respectful process. Praise is not overdone but genuinely delivered when deserved.

The office space is modern with great integration of technology into the workspace. The firm laptops are more than sufficient and get the work done smoothly. The dress code is business Monday through to Thursday with a smart casual Friday. However if you have client engagements on the Friday you are expected to dress appropriately in business attire.

It involved a written application, psychometric testing, a video submission, and then an in-person interview. Each step was very accessible, and the team was extremely friendly and welcoming along the way.

Pay and bonuses are fair in the industry we work in, if not above our competitors. That is made clear to staff and bonuses further reflect the goal of the firm to be a leader in the industry.

Training
I was flown interstate to meet graduates from other offices on two occasions. These trips resulted in returning with lots of gained confidence and valuable knowledge. In addition to this formal training, we regularly have restructuring specific training from ARITA (Australian Restructuring Insolvency & Turnaround Association), which is great to give more context to my work. My colleagues in the office are always more than happy to chat about technical aspects of the job which boosted my learning significantly too.

Work Hours
The firm is highly flexible with work hours. While I prefer working from the office, the 60/40 split (60% days office, 40% days remote) is welcomed and the firm is always accommodating to personal circumstances. In instances where you have no work due, there is no expectation to stay beyond work hours.
