Carly Shaw

It’s exciting that I get to work on projects and contribute in a meaningful way, whereby I can see how the work that I’m doing contributes to the task at hand.

7.15 AM

My morning begins with my alarm, and typically a snooze as I’m not such a morning person! Then it’s time to get ready – I quickly shower, get dressed, put on some light makeup, and make sure that my bag is fully packed for the day.

8.00 AM

I leave my house to catch the 8.17 am train and begin commuting to the city. Even though I wasn’t such a city girl prior to starting my role at RACV, I really enjoy the hustle and bustle of everyone heading into the city.

8.30 AM

I arrive in the city and walk about 10-15 minutes to get to the office. I love my walk to and from the station to the office, soaking up the fresh air and messaging some of my fellow grads to see who is around for a morning coffee!

8.45 AM

Once I arrive at the office, I find a desk near my team, say hi to everyone and kick off my day by checking my emails. 9.00 am rolls around, whereby my team likes to start the day with a team catch up, some project tracking and then a discussion of everyone’s key responsibilities.

10.00 AM

I head downstairs to meet with some graduates for a coffee! I love this time as we get to catch up on what we’ve been working on within our teams, but also get to discuss common interests like the most previous episode of Survivor, warehouse sales or the AFL footy season!

A few of our go-to coffee places include Mr Ashcroft, Maker Coffee or Little Avenue Des Italians Espresso Bar!

10.15 AM

It’s so easy for your day to be filled by meetings, so I like to block out some time to get some ‘focus time’ where I can get some undistracted work done. My go-to is heading to one of the silent desk rooms, where I set up my ideal working station comprised of pens, highlighters, a notebook, my laptop and some headphones.

12.00 PM

It’s lunchtime! There are so many great food places around the city – sometimes it’s hard to decide what to get!

My current go to is the salads from Corner and Bench, however, the restaurants in Hardware Lane are also incredibly delicious (Miznon is elite)!

Once I grab lunch, I head back to the kitchen area on level 9 where I hang out with either my team or the grads. If there is still time, I love to head out for a quick 10-minute walk around the side streets, to get some fresh air before returning back to work.

1.00 PM

Currently, the P&C team are working on two major projects regarding employee engagement and the onboarding experience. We frequently have meetings with both internal and external stakeholders who are supporting us on these projects and use this time to touch base on where everyone is at, troubleshoot any pain points and establish the next steps so that we can continue moving forward.

3.00 PM

Following those meetings, I received a brief from my manager on some work that needs to be actioned quickly. After I quick conversation with her, I write my own to–do list, which includes a breakdown of the steps that I need to take to complete that work. I re-prioritise my overall to-do list, and ensure that I reallocate and adjust when I had initially planned to do things so that I can still meet all of my deadlines.

4.00 PM

I touch base with my team to get some feedback, and then make any edits or changes required. The rest of my day revolves around continuing my current task and setting up for the next day. It’s exciting that I get to work on projects and contribute in a meaningful way, whereby I can see how the work that I’m doing contributes to the task at hand.

5.00 PM

I wrap up my workday and head over to the train station for my commute home. I look forward to some downtime, which typically consists of some reformer Pilates, dinner with my family and some reality tv.
