What's your job about?

Sharp & Carter is a recruitment agency where we find and attract the best talent in the market, whilst also having a core focus on building genuine and meaningful relationships with both candidates and clients. We believe that what we do and how we do it is important and can make a difference.

As part of the Finance and Accounting team, I specialise in recruiting transactional finance roles across the shared services function. A typical day would be to arrive at the North Sydney office, grab my morning coffee, check my emails and catch up with my colleagues. After this, I will sit down and figure out my game plan write myself a ‘To-Do’ list in order of what is most urgent. Then at around mid-morning, I’ll have a meeting with my manager to discuss and update the team regarding the status of the various roles we are currently working on. I really enjoy those morning catchups as it allows me to connect with my team who always provide such a supportive and encouraging environment. Following that meeting, I spend some time on platforms such as Seek to source and connect with candidates. I will typically have scheduled meetings with the candidates via mediums like Zoom where I can gain a better understanding of their background, motivations and what they are looking for so I can fit them into the right role. Following these meetings, I then would go and liaise with clients, which allows me to utilise the genuine relationships that have been built on both sides and to match up the right role with the right candidate.

What's your background?

I grew up in Sydney where the majority of my schooling and experiences has been based. However, growing up I often spent many summer breaks abroad visiting family in various parts of the world such as Indonesia, Malaysia and America. I am so grateful for those experiences as they allowed me to develop a sense of cultural awareness and enhance my communication skills. For university, I attended Macquarie University and studied a Bachelor of Commerce, where I majored in Human Resources. Throughout my degree, I worked in various industries such as childcare, hospitality and retail. I believe that because all these industries were so unique and different to each other, they taught me many valuable life skills and experiences. Outside of my previous studies and work, I have grown up playing in a local and well-known Oztag competition. This helps me to stay active whilst also allowing me to create that work-life balance.

I joined Sharp & Carter in October 2021 where I completed a 12-week internship. The internship provided me with a chance to learn more about the recruiting industry and enabled me to realise that recruitment could be an exciting career path. After a successful experience, I was offered the opportunity to continue in the graduate program and I have been enjoying the journey ever since.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Absolutely! I genuinely think that people from different backgrounds and disciplines can successfully transition into a career in recruitment. Though, I believe a person’s characteristics play a more integral part in whether they would thrive in the recruitment industry. For example, having strong people and networking skills is significant as recruitment encourages you to engage with a wide range of people from all walks of life. Additionally, I think strong recruiters will have characteristics such as the ability to be adaptable and trustworthy, as well as being an effective communicator.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

One of the best parts of the job is genuinely building meaningful relationships with both candidates and clients. However, a great by-product of that is helping to assist candidates to secure the job they have been eagerly seeking. When you can assist a candidate to secure the role that helps them progress into the next step of their career, it is a great feeling. On the other hand, it is equally as rewarding when the client is happy with the candidate that has been placed.

Additionally, the thing I love most about my job is the culture that Sharp & Carter have built. My colleagues are genuine in everything they do where they will always celebrate success as well as support me on those days which can be tough.

What are the limitations of your job?

Whilst I absolutely love what I do, recruitment can possess certain challenges such as constantly facing rejection from both candidates and clients. For example, it can be disappointing when you work hard to bring a client and candidate together, only for one side to fall through. However, a good recruiter can handle rejections by being able to be resilient and bouncing back from disappointment.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  1. As cliché as it sounds, enjoy your time at uni! Go out with your friends, enjoy time with family, join societies, and try not to stress too much about upcoming exams/assessments – it’ll all work out in the end.
  2. Find out what motivates you so that you know what you want in your career and take the steps in making that happen. Seek opportunities whether that be through internships or volunteer roles as it can be hard to know what you want unless you gain first-hand experience.
  3. Be patient, persevere and back yourself - setbacks are merely an opportunity to learn and improve.
