My tasks really vary depending on the day and what is necessary for the project at the time

7.30 AM

Luckily at Head Office, my days start a little bit later and I’m able to wake up in daylight. My mornings almost always involve a battle between me and my snooze button… But eventually I get myself out the door around 7.30 am, ready for my daily walk to the office. I could drive, but so far I’ve been successfully refraining from it!

I get into the office, and it’s time to sit down with some tea(and sometimes a small breakfast if I remembered…) and check those emails! Sometimes there’s news about the office and upcoming events to catch up on as well.

Once I’m up to speed with what happened overnight, it’s time to get right into it.

My tasks really vary depending on the day and what is necessary for the project at the time.

I’m currently working on a water treatment plant upgrade project, which means that one day I might be reviewing P&IDs to check the valves are correct, and another I might be checking the line sizes instead.

10.30 AM

Time for a snack and a quick break :)

10.40 AM

Back to work! A more recent task I did was to review the newly published drinking water rules and to make sure the plant design will be compliant with the monitoring requirements, and to document any changes that needed to be made.

1.00 PM

Here’s when I stop for lunch and have a chat with other colleagues in the kitchen / eating area. Sometimes when the weather is nice, we can even sit outside to eat.

Sometimes the project I’m working on will require site visits. This could include driving out to contractors for an in-person meeting, or to conduct factory acceptance tests (FATs) on equipment that’s in the process of being built and assembled. (a FAT test is basically checking that what has been built reflects the process depicted in the P&IDs). Here I get to meet the contractors, discuss changes, and understand their side of the project.

3.00 PM

Usually by the afternoon I’m in need of some extra caffeine or sugar, and that helps me get through the rest of my work for the day. This is an extra important step to help with tasks like compiling datasheets or writing detailed procedures that will be used by clients.

Quick Pick Me Up

4.30 PM

End of my day! Unless I was able to coax my partner into picking me up, it’s time for another half hour walk home.

5.00 PM

I get home!
