8.30 AM

Once I have finished feeding all the animals, it's time to do some work. I start my morning catching up on all the Slack messages and emails that I have missed from last week. I am currently rotating through the Security Identity and Access team in the Systems pod for 3 months. Our pod is currently working on a project to integrate all applications Xero engineers use to create a #beautiful experience for our Xero customers. I received an email with confirmation that a test account has been created for me for an application Xero uses to send emails to our customers. I can now use this test account to test the integration with our identity provider. This means that Xero employees who use this application to send emails to our customers can authenticate through our identity provider via Single Sign-On. This removes the need for new passwords for each different application Xero employees use and makes it a better experience for Xero employees to access these applications.

Now I can start integrating this test account with our identity provider in our test identity provider environment. My first task is to create some test users for this application, by adding my pod as users. I then need to build infrastructure to add this new application to our identity provider and create a pull request for it. Finally, I need to create a connection with the application and our identity provider using a domain TXT record.

9.30 AM

After creating a couple of pull requests, it's time for a breakfast break. Today I decided to make myself some muesli with yogurt and lots of blueberries.

The infrastructure pull request has been reviewed and is ready for merging in our identity provider test and production environment. Every change made to the infrastructure is what we expect so no fun times breaking things today.

Time for planning! First we go through our kanban board with all of our team's tasks on it, and we all take turns sharing any updates we have on tasks assigned to us and if we need any help. Everyone has been updated on what I have been doing this morning. After we go through our kanban board, we plan our next sprint and what tasks we want to bring into the next sprint. As we are nearing the end of the year, we have decided that we won’t bring in any new tasks to complete and to just clean up any loose ends with tasks we are currently doing. One of the advantages of working from home is I get to be with my dogs all day, and at this time of day, it's already been a tiring day for some of my dogs. I often have this view behind me while I am in meetings.

11.30 AM

I have a meeting with my people lead. My people lead is separate from the teams I am rotating through and also looks after other grads at Xero. This meeting is to reflect on any feedback my team and my buddy have for me, and to ask any questions I have for him.

12.00 PM

Lunch time! I love working from home because I get to walk my dogs in the sun.

1.00 PM

Back to work! I have a meeting with the Internal IT team on how they use our identity provider and any tips they have for us for integrating apps on the identity provider. They gave us some really good tips and advice for us so that we can avoid making silly mistakes later down the line.

1.30 PM

Time for some team bonding. We have this time each day to bond as a Security Identity and Access team by playing games, doing the Stuff quiz, or discussing anything team related. Currently we love to play Codenames or Gartic Phone.

2.00 PM

Now that I have finished with all my meetings for today, I am now going to have a look at my pod's kanban board and see what tasks are assigned to me that I can work on.

4.00 PM

I have been working on achieving my Terraform Associate certification, so to end the day I am going to be studying for that.

4.30 PM

Done for the day. Time to relax and hang out in the sun.
