Make a lasting impression: What to do after an interview

Mastercard Australia

The wait after an interview can be anxiety-inducing. You've done your best, but what else can you do to ensure a favorable outcome? Here are 5 things to do after an interview to help you make a lasting impression.

1. Reflect

After the interview, take some time to reflect on your conversation(s). Are you still interested in the job? Are there any additional questions you have about the opportunity or the organisation? Make note of any specific discussions from your interviews that you would like to reference when you write thank you notes.

2. Send a personalised thank you note

Sending a thank you note after an interview is an important way to stand out from the competition. Taking the time to write a personalised note to each person with whom you interviewed is a polite way to show your appreciation for their time and consideration, and to demonstrate that you’ve thoughtfully reflected on the unique aspects of each conversation. It could be the difference between getting the job or not, so make sure to send your thank you notes in a timely manner.

3. Send any supporting documents

If you reference specific work you’ve done during the interview, be sure to follow up with specific examples by providing the people you’ve interviewed with copies of the supporting documents. If you are interviewing for a marketing, design, or creative role, we encourage you to share your creative portfolio. This will help show the interviewers the level of work that you are capable of and will likely set you apart from the competition.

4. Connect on LinkedIn

If you haven’t done so already, connect with your interviewers on LinkedIn. Connecting with them reconfirms your interest in the role and company, and keeps you top of mind.

5. Be patient and relax

The anticipation of a response back from a company after you've interviewed can be nerve-wracking. Keep in mind that everything takes time and it's all part of the process. While it may be tempting to keep replaying the interview in your mind, trying to find what went wrong, it's best to analyse it only once or twice, send your follow up messages, then try to let go and trust that you did your best.
