Sometimes when you are trying to get where you think you need to be you do not notice how far you have come, look back and appreciate the progress you make.

There are many opportunities for learning and development, not only within your set role but outside of it too. I have been fortunate to have had such supportive teams that encourage and push for these kinds of experiences that have allowed me to up-skill and better myself.

At its core all my work is about making a difference for people. As an added bonus, every now and then you find yourself in a meeting with a bunch of really amazing people all trying to make things better.

Keep pushing the limits of what you think you can achieve; you have no idea what you are capable of.

Grades are important, but the main thing is driving opportunities for yourself - social, professional or otherwise.

The diversity of work that is available to do is incredibly vast. No bug that needs fixing or new feature that needs adding will feel monotonous.

The coolest part of my job so far has to be travelling overseas to represent Aotearoa New Zealand during trade negotiations. As daunting and stressful as it is when you’re sitting at the negotiating table, it is certainly a position I feel incredibly privileged to be in.

With the growing interest in greener transportation options, working on rail is the best place to be. There are so many opportunities in KiwiRail if you just ask around the company. Always ask questions and be proactive so you can get involved in what you are passionate about.
