On February 26, 1970, NPR became a public entity and was formed through a coalition of 90 public stations. Its first radio satellite dispersion network was launched on June 20, 1980. 

The 2000s marked a new era for NPR as it launched its first on-air program "All Songs Considered". The company also played a crucial role in shedding light on the September 11th attack. 

In 2010, NPR launched its app to bring listeners closer to the action. In 2016, two employees of NPR were killed on official assignment.
