The Nielsen story

Arthur Nielsen in 1923 looked to create a collection of data to drive informed market decisions. Following the introduction of this idea by Arthur, the company completed its first marketing research and survey performance.

After determining the quality of the conveyor belt in 1923, the company expanded its data collection to food indexes and department store sales in 1934. Nielsen also found new ways to understand sales patterns through auditorial surveys.

Since the point of its creation, Nielsen has continued to modify its methods of data collection and the sort of data it collects. In 2017, the company created an index to understand the performance of sustainability-driven companies.

Culture and Vibes

Nielsen hinges its success on diversity and inclusion. They fuse these two pillars with other principles of trust, appreciation, respect, perseverance, and purpose.

Carefully combining these features lets Nielsen maintain a fun and friendly environment where success takes center stage.

Recruitment Process

As a company that focuses on diversity, Nielsen employs graduate and intern talents from different cultural aspects as they believe that is what makes their workplace special.

There are three rounds in Nielsen’s recruitment process post submitting a job application. The first assessment round for graduates and interns is an MCQ round that tests how well applicants can observe minimal changes.

Graduate and internship applicants who pass this round are then required to undertake a coding round. This round involves three questions that require solutions to be provided within 1 hr and 30 minutes.

Finally, applicants who pass the second round are invited for a technical round. The questions in this round are usually from the resume and test how well graduates and interns can apply their knowledge to real-life situations.

Applicants who pass these rounds satisfactorily are invited for interviews after which an offer of employment is made.

Career Prospects

Nielsen empowers graduates and interns with resources that help them grow and develop. They understand that every employee is unique in their way so they provide resources that help them embrace their career growth.

Upon acceptance into the company, employees are given job training that introduces them to work processes within the company and offers networking opportunities with industry leaders.

They help employees design career paths laden with growth milestones that’ll see them take the license to think big and explore better ways to achieve results.

Remuneration

Graduate employees at Nielsen earn an average of $117,000 per year while interns earn around $35,000 annually.

Social Contributions

Through a Niselen-oriented ESG strategy, Nielsen structures its business around environmentally responsible business practices. These practices are extended to communities they operate in through free projects that guide communities toward improving their quality of life.

They utilize assessment methods like Sustainability Accounting Standards Board and Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures to inform the world on how to make better environmental decisions.

Employees who’d love to also work on projects of their own are supported through Cares and Green Business Groups. The Nielsen foundation also amplifies the voice of minority groups towards economic development and public representation.

Controversies

As a key indicator in the direction of marketing revenues, Nielsen has to be authentic, fair, and accurate. This was not the case in the fourth quarter of 2021 when it was found that Nielsen undercounted the amount of viewership of a show.

The 2-6% undercount led to losses north of $300 million in advertising revenue. Several factors including the introduction of streaming services were cited to have caused the level of accuracy.

Through all this, it was clear that Nielsen once again had to find ways to remain accurate in the data it provides with more innovative processes.
